BATU PAHAT, July 8 (Bernama) -- Former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was conferred an honorary doctorate in technical education at the ninth convocation of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) here Thursday.
UTHM Chancellor, the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, officiated at the convocation and presented the degree to Tun Abdullah.
Sultan Ibrahim, in his speech, said the award reflected the appreciation and recognition UTHM accorded to Tun Abdullah's contribution to national development, particularly the growth of technical and vocational education.
"I and the staff of the university as well as the people of Johor extend our congratulations to Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on the conferment of the award on him," he said.
Tun Abdullah said efforts must be made to get 70 per cent of the country's students to pursue technical and vocational subjects to realise the objective of making the country a developed nation.
A total of 242 graduands received their scrolls at the convocation, 222 of them receiving the bachelor's degree, 15 Masters and five doctorate.
Tun Abdullah's wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah, and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin were also present at the event.
